What utilities are for...

Utilities provide essential public services—power to light and heat your home, or the phone line that keeps you connected to the outside world.

What utilities care about...

It isn't you!

Privately-owned utilities are in business to make money. They do not exist to provide good service at a fair price or to protect the environment.

Most Oregonians are served by at least one privately-owned, or investor-owned, utility. Examples include Qwest, Portland General Electric, Pacific Power or NW Natural. And if a private utility has to choose between making money for its stockholders and serving you better ... well, you'll probably come in second.

CUB represents YOU!

The Citizens' Utility Board of Oregon (CUB) has been Oregon's utility consumer advocate for residential customers since voters created it in 1984.

Because of CUB, consumers throughout the state have received more than $3.6 billion in rate reductions and refunds! That adds up to hundreds of dollars in savings for every dollar contributed to CUB by folks just like you.

CUB has also won important policy victories that:

  • protect the environment
  • increase consumer privacy
  • help low-income Oregonians

  • You can help!

While private utility companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on lawyers, economists and other "experts" to convince the PUC and legislature to raise your rates, CUB depends on the support of 6,000 ratepayers like you. Most of our budget comes from individual donations.
