Consumer Tips:
Choosing a long-distance carrier
Would you like to save money on your long distance telephone bills but don't know where to start? It's not as difficult or complicated as you may think. All it takes is a few simple steps and a couple of questions to get you on the right track for some savings.
First, get a handle on your calling habits. Go through your last three or four long distance bills. How many calls do you make a month? How long do you talk? What time of day do you usually make calls? Where do you call? (local, long distance, international)
Next, call your current long distance carrier. Don't assume they have you on their best plan. Ask if they have a calling plan that is a better fit for your calling habits. If they have a better plan for you, find out if there are any monthly flat fees or monthly minimums associated with the plan. Now that you know what your current long distance carrier can do for you, it's time to shop arousnd.
You have the right to choose your primary long distance carrier and to change carriers whenever you wish. If you have access to the World Wide Web there are a few sites that offer helpful comparisons between the different long distance carriers. These include: • www.abtolls.com • www.trac.org • www.10-10phonerates.com ( for a comparison of dial-around rates like 10-10-220).
When you find a few plans that give you the best rates for your calling habits, call those carriers using their toll free numbers and verify the rate you found on the web.
Then ask about promotions. Carriers frequently run promotions. Simply ask them, "What is the best deal on long distance you are currently offering?" You may be surprised what you learn by asking this simple question.
Be sure to ask about switching benefits. When inquiring from a carrier you don't currently use, ask, "I am currently using (your current company) for my long distance. I heard you have good service. Can you tell me why I should switch to you?" The carrier will frequently offer you a special promotion.
The last step is to have the carrier send you information on the rate in writing. Request that this includes how long the rate lasts, if there are any flat fees and/or charges for federal and state programs, and what taxes will be added to the bill. By following these simple steps you should be able to see noticeable savings on your next long distance bill.
